The Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) is only available in Scotland.
DAS is a government run programme which allows you to repay the money you owe over an extended period of time. It gives you protection from your creditors and stops them taking action against you to recover the money you owe them.
Your debts are repaid through a Debt Payment Programme (DPP) and if approved, all interest, fees and charges on the debt will be frozen, resulting in them being written off if you complete the DPP.
You make one affordable payment and that payment is then distributed to your creditors.
Benefits
- Interest, fees and charges are frozen from the date of approval and waived on successful completion of your DPP
- You may not be forced to release equity from your home and your property will be protected from further legal action by your creditors
- If your circumstances change, the DPP is flexible and the payment amount you pay can be varied
- Your creditors will still receive the money they are owed but this will be over a longer period of time
Things you need to know
- Creditors will not agree to write off any of your debt and your debt will take longer to pay off
- The DAS will be recorded on your credit file and you may find it difficult to obtain credit in the future
- You will not be considered for DAS if you have already signed a Trust Deed or been declared bankrupt
